SUMMARY:Kiuryaq in Hay River
DESCRIPTION:Presented by \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Production By  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNever whistle at the Northern Lights. They will come down and get you. They will play soccer with your head. They are also ancestors calling you home. Kiuryaq is ‘Aurora Borealis’ in the Western Arctic Inuvialuit language of Inuvialuktun\, in reference to their bright colours. \n\n\n\nKiuryaq is an immersive circumpolar theatre performance that explores our relationship with the Northern Lights. It is a multi-disciplinary piece created in collaboration with sound composers\, digital media artists\, and theatre artists from Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples of Canada\, Greenland\, Sápmi territory and Alaska.  \n\n\n\nWe follow these northern stories of connection that inspire us through the aurora borealis\, or kiuryaq in Inuvialuktun. These stories – frightening\, spiritual\, epic and playful – are situated in our memories of then and experiences of now. All are held in our vast cosmologies\, converging in ways that could not have imagined when this journey began.  \n\n\n\nKiuryaq is about two siblings born in the North\, an older sister and a younger brother. One is taken down south by a forced adoption and raised with no knowledge of their place of birth\, the other is raised under the Aurora with their grandparents. Under the ancestral connection of the Northern Lights\, choices are made that change both their realities. \n\n\n\nKiuryaq is a transformative performance work which brings the circumpolar region together to share wisdom\, warnings and humour to all those who are curious. SUMMARY:TOKARA in Hay River
DESCRIPTION:TOKARA was founded in Nagano Prefecture\, Japan\, by Wadaiko Artist Art Lee. The group has become a strong force in the world of Wadaiko (Taiko Drumming) both in Japan and internationally. \n\n\n\nWhile incorporating arrangements of traditional Taiko pieces into their performance\, TOKARA has created an all-new style of Taiko\, where electrifying speed and power meet the group’s own arrangements of movement\, incorporating dance and the circular fluidity of the Chinese martial arts and aikido. \n\n\n\nTOKARA’s new style of Taiko music also brings rhythmic signatures from other cultures around the world to create a jazzy and exciting style of taiko music. TOKARA started its international debut with a six-week coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. and Canada\, followed by a two-month tour in 2005\, both to critical acclaim and sold-out audiences. TOKARA has since performed as the main attraction in many events\, including the Hamanako Hanahaku All-Japan Expo and the Taipei City 120th Anniversary World Music Festival. \n\n\n\nSince the group’s inception\, TOKARA tours three to four times a year in Asia\, the U.S.\, various countries in Europe\, Australia\, and India\, as well as making regular appearances at some of the top Taiko performances all over Japan. \n\n\n\nTOKARA continues the intensive process of continually reinventing new pieces and playing styles in an attempt to further develop the group’s originality. DESCRIPTION:A East Coast Treat!\n\n\n\nOld Man Luedecke is the recording and performing name of two-time JUNO award-winning and Polaris prize-nominated singer/songwriter Chris Luedecke. He’s a multiple East Coast Music Award winner known for his high-energy\, banjo-driven stompers\, touching guitar ballads\, and dry\, humorous stories. Old Man Luedecke has been making a soundtrack to an authentic life for nearly twenty years. \n\n\n\nBorn in Toronto and long-time resident of Chester\, Nova Scotia\, Luedecke began recording in the early 2000s DIY folk scene of Halifax. DESCRIPTION:A brand-new concert made just for NACC with a rising opera star from New York & An ensemble of WORLD CLASS musicians!\n\n\n\nKofi Hayford is a young\, prize-winning Ghanaian-American bass\, described as possessing an “impressive\, “sonorous”\, and “stentorian bass voice”\, also produces a distinct sound – easily identified for its unique timbre. With almost 40 different operatic roles under his belt\, he is swiftly building his reputation as an accomplished artist by bringing an “exciting” and “stunning” sound to the stage. \n\n\n\nHe performs with an ensemble of musicians of diverse backgrounds including Daniel Beliavsky who is an educator\, concert pianist\, music theorist\, composer\, and filmmaker. He has performed in Europe and throughout the United States with both orchestra and in recital–notable engagements include concerto performances with the Milwaukee and New Jersey Symphony Orchestras and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. Joining the ensemble is Dominican tenor José Heredia. Mr. Heredia was a 1st Prize Winner of the 2014 NJ Association of Verismo Opera International Vocal Competition\, and a finalist/encouragement award winner of the Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition in 2015 and 2017\, José Heredia has thrilled audiences with his voice of “Pavarottian shimmer.”    \n\n\n\nThe Northern Arts and Cultural Centre is thrilled to welcome Kofi Hayford and his ensemble to the stage again as the opener of our 40th Anniversary Season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ensemble\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Beliavsky\, Ph.D.\, is an educator\, concert pianist\, music theorist\, composer\, and filmmaker. Daniel produces music documentaries through his production company\, Opus1films\, which in 2011 released Sonata (1957)\, a film about the distinguished American composer Donald Harris’s opus one\, the Sonata for piano\, and about Harris’s early career in Paris. Now Chair of the Fine Art and Music Department at Yeshiva University in New York City\, Daniel has been a visiting professor of music theory\, piano performance\, aesthetics\, writing about music\, and history at several universities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA 1st Prize Winner of the 2014 NJ Association of Verismo Opera International Vocal Competition\, and a finalist/encouragement award winner of the Giulio Gari International Vocal Competition in 2015 and 2017\, Dominican tenor José Heredia has thrilled audiences with his voice of “Pavarottian shimmer.” Mr. Heredia started singing in a church in New York back in 2006. SUMMARY:Johnny Cole - Meet me at The Rex in Hay River
DESCRIPTION:Celebration of Metis Roots\n\n\n\nFor fifty years\, Norman Glowach has been playing music in Yellowknife. He started playing the drums\, but he also sings and plays guitar. Growing up in Yellowknife\, Norm has been fortunate to play many styles of music. At an early age\, he played in school bands and stage bands. Professionally\, he’s played old time music\, fiddle music\, country music\, rock & roll\, jazz and blues. These musical experiences all come out in the music he writes and records. He has run his studio\, Spiritwalker Productions\, for over 30 years in downtown Yellowknife. Norm credits the driving force behind his persona Johnny Cole and the musical Meet Me at the Rex to be the pictures and stories of his family’s history. Norman started Meet Me at the Rex eleven years ago when he began searching for ancestors on his mother’s side. At that time\, he was working at the NWT Archives. This gave him an understanding of how to access data from the various levels of archives in Canada. As information and images came forward about his ancestors\, songs started to come to him. At that point\, he didn’t have the idea of creating a production containing these songs – he was just trying to understand his roots. He began to understand his ancestors’ role in the development of Canada.  \n\n\n\nIn his search\, Norm was able to find French and Irish roots in the Red River Colony who mixed with Indigenous peoples\, creating the Métis who populated Western Canada. As the show was coming together\, long-time friends came forward to give him direction. One friend told him the roots he was writing about had a common theme: a story that was similar to that of many other Métis in our country. This gave focus to the project and has been a theme in shaping this show. Norm’s family roots run deep in Canada. Over the years\, the branches stretched to Yellowknife. The production is called Meet Me at the Rex as an homage to Norman’s grandparents\, who were the owners of this popular cafe from 1941 -1966. The Rex was a meeting place and home to many stories of how his family came to Yellowknife. He chose the 1950s time period to tell the story as this was a significant era for the Café. Norm has said\, “At times\, I’ve felt like my ancestors were guiding me in the writing of the songs\, the searching for information\, and are present during the live productions.”  \n\n\n\nCome on in\, sit down\, and have some coffee and pie. SUMMARY:Heart of the Dene Storytelling Festival: Hay River
DESCRIPTION:Heart of the DeneIN PARTNERSHIP WITH Northwestel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaggie Mercredi is Denesoline from Gani Koe’ and is a member of the Kai Taile’ Dene First Nation.With a vivid imagination since childhood\, she could visualize the stories heard around her\, understanding them\, then re-sharing them in her own way. She was introduced to the performing arts as a young adult\, inspiring her to learn more about theatre. She joined various performance groups\, became a co-founder of an Indigenous theatre group in the North\,graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in Toronto\, and completed storytelling and music residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts. With the skills and knowledge gained\, she has written\, directed\, and produced for many venues. She has also coached groups in theatre and performance skills training. Maggie is honoured and excited with the opportunity to write alongside other artists in bringing alive the stories we carry from our language\,our ancestors\, our parents\, our family\, friends and communities for the future generations to enjoy\,long after we are gone. \n\n\n\nDavid Gon is Tlicho. He was born in Yellowknife and raised in the bush with the traditional way of life. He then moved to Behchoko to start school. He grew up listening to the beat of the drum and watched people dance to the rhythm. He taught himself how to play when he was 12 years old\, on a guitar his father bought him. David later formed a band called ‘Captain Eddy’.David has written his own songs and recorded albums of original music. His music is the expression of the value of the old ways as well as the new\, using the traditional Dene drum\, reflecting early influences and admiration of the wisdom\, stories and songs of the land\,his ancestors\, the Elders and the hopes and dreams of the young people. David has performed at Expo 86 in Vancouver\, at the Canada Winter Games in Cape Breton in 1987\, at Culture Canada in Ottawa in 1988\, and the Arctic Winter Games in 1990. \n\n\n\nCassandra (River) Blondin Burt is a two-spirit Dene Poet\, Artist\, and Earth Medicine Maker. Their work is grounded in the exploration of healing through co-creation with earth and story. Cassandra believes that the radical act of being in-relation to our other-than-human-relations is an act of political and personal rebellion\,and a pathway for collective and personal transformation and healing.Through a deepening relationship with the land-body we call Earth\, Cassandra explores regenerative art and creation praxis that allows them to move through myriad contemporary settler-colonial social structures and ideologies with intent\, and curiosity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

DESCRIPTION:A CELTIC TREAT \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSkye Consort & Emma Björling perform trans-Atlantic arrangements of songs and tunes from Sweden\,Norway\, Ireland\, Scotland\, England\, Québec\, Acadia\,the USA\, as well as original compositions. Each musician brings their own individual interpretation to these traditions to create this extraordinary collaboration\, consisting of voices\, fiddle\, nyckelharpa\, cello\, bouzouki\, banjo\, and percussion. Collectively\, the band present an assortment of whirling polskas\, groovy reels\, passionate love songs\, breathtaking hymns\, and original compositions.All with the group are seasoned instructors eager to share their knowledge and love for their musical traditions. \n\n\n\nEmma Björling (lead voice\, shruti box\, percussion) is an award-winning Swedish singer\, composer\,arranger\, active in the renowned Scandinavian bands Kongero and Lyy. Both bands have toured the world\, and are busy in the European folk-trad scene. Emma regularly teaches and conducts workshops all over the world. \n\n\n\nAlex Kehler (fiddle\, nyckelharpa\, vocals) In addition to his work with Skye Consort\, he is a member of La Nef\, Soulwood\, Kehler Williams duo\, Les Siffleurs de Nuits\, and Triton. \n\n\n\nAmanda Keesmaat (cello\, vocals) Principal cellist of Arion Baroque orchestra\, Amanda Keesmaat has also performed with Les Charbonniers de L’Enfer\, OktoEcho\, Jean-François Bélanger and Projet ClaireObscur. \n\n\n\nSeán Dagher (cittern/bouzouki\, banjo & vocals)is the artistic director of La Nef and an active performer\, arranger\, and composer of music from various folk and classical music traditions. He won the OPUS “Creation of the Year” award in 2014 for Sea Songs and has been nominated for numerous Adisq awards \n\n\n\nSKYE CONSORT has been accompanying singers since 2000and has recorded 5 CDs with singers such as Matthew White\, Shannon Mercer\, and Michael Slattery on the ATMA\, ANALEKTA\, and OMBÜ record labels. \n\n\n\nSEÁN DAGHER is widely known for his recordings with the Assassin’s Creed video game series\, including Black Flag. His renditions of sea shanties and other songs from the games have been streamed some 70 million times. His own Shanty of the Week video series receives thousands of views each week\, and has a loyal following the world over.

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with  \n\n\n\nA CREE TAKEOVER | BY RENELTTA ARLUKINSPIRED BY THE YOUTH OF FROG LAKE FIRST NATION \n\n\n\nCO-PRODUCTION WITH AKPIK THEATRE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe groundbreaking Pawâkan Macbeth is Indigenous playwright\, Reneltta Arluk’s reimagining of Shakespeare’s darkest play into Cree history\, legend and cosmology. Set in Plains Cree territory in the 1870s\, before the establishment of First Nations reserves\, Pawâkan Macbeth takes place in a time when First Nations warred with each other and the Canadian Government over territory\, food supplyand trade. Harsh environments brought immense fear\, starvation\, and uncertainty together to awaken the darkest of Cree spirits\, the Wihtiko – an evil being with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. Inspired from stories shared by Indigenous Elders in Frog Lake First Nation following protocol\, Arluk has created a new\,visceral experience of Macbeth; a convergence of Shakespeare’s language\, modern English\, and Cree. As historical wars are waged with the Cree and Nakodaagainst the Blackfoot\, Macikosisân (Macbeth)\, a great Okihcitâw (warrior)\, becomes consumed by the cannibal spirit Wihtiko. He plots with KâwanihotIskwew (Lady Macbeth)\, to kill their Chief\, Okimâw Wîpâstim (Duncan).
