DESCRIPTION:Les Voix Humaines are back in the NWT to grace our ears once again with this special Yellowknife performance\, as founding member and most incredible gambist Susie Napper takes flight with the Russian harpsichordist Elizaveta Miller. Also featuring local baroque lutenist Tyler Hawkins\, their collective programme ‘Adversaries in Love’ transports us to the connected worlds and unmatched genius of Gauthier\, Marais\, Abel\, Bach(s) and Weiss\, all played on authentic period instruments. \n\n\n\nThe viol duo\, Les Voix Humaines\, brings flair and brilliance to their performances! Susie Napper and Mélisande Corriveau have performed together as members of Les Voix Humaines Consort for two decades and collaborated on many projects. They have performed across Canada\, in the USA\, France and Belgium as a duo. They both play on historic viols by London luthier\, Barak Norman. \n\n\n\nThe duo builds on decades of performances worldwide by Susie Napper and Margaret Little who’s musical complicity was compared to the skill of a pair of trapeze artists or the telepathic communion of jazz artists. Their many prizes and recordings are the foundation on which the new duo has built a creative repertoire and innovative style to inspire a new generation of music-lovers. \n\n\n\nAnguille sous roche – Something Fishy\, the duo’s latest recording and video features delicacies from the French repertoire offering humour\, virtuosity and tenderness in a unique\, creative programme. Last November they recorded a new CD of several iconic works by J.S. Bach arranged by Susie Napper for two viols. \n\n\n\nThe duo has been joined by many celebrated soloists including singers Suzie Leblanc\, Daniel Taylor\, Charles Daniels and Jonathon Adams and instrumentalists\, Wieland and Bart Kuijken\, Davide Monti and Nigel North. Susie Napper has the honour of performing with Russian harpsichordist Elizaveta Miller for this special performance in Yellowknife. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecent recipient of the honour of Companion of Arts and Letters of Quebec\, cellist\, gambist and continuo player par excellence\, Susie Napper is alternatively praised or admonished for her colourful and controversial performances of solo and chamber repertoire of the baroque! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA rebel to the core\, from an artistic milieu in London\, in her teens she played début performances of Ligetti and Stockhausen as well as performance-art productions in alternative venues. By contrast she studied at Juilliard in New York at the height of the Vietnam resistance and at the Paris Conservatoire at the end of the student riots of ‘68. \n\n\n\nSan Francisco followed\, where\, having had an epiphany on receiving a bass viol\, she threw herself headlong into new-wave\, HIP baroque music-making\, teaching herself the viol by playing\, reading treatises and creating new styles of performance inspired by old! \n\n\n\nAs well as co-foundiing Philharmonia Baroque with her partner and inspiration\, baroque oboist and writer\, the late Bruce Haynes\, they spent decades parenting delightful kids and musicing in Montreal where she created the Montreal Baroque Festival\, a vehicle to unite the multitalented\, Montreal early music community. \n\n\n\nShe has spent decades with a foot on either side of the Atlantic recording\, performing\, teaching in Montreal and Copenhagen and touring around Europe\, the Far East and Oceania often with the viol duo\, Les Voix humaines. Amongst dozens of recordings\, the complete Concerts a deux violes esgales by Sieur de Ste Colombe is a highlight and her arrangements of music stolen from the wider baroque repertoire amuse both musicians and audiences alike! \n\n\n\nEither praised or criticized for her use of rubato\, general freedom of expression\, variety of bow strokes and undying preference for harmony over melody\, she is constantly searching for rhetorical meaning and eloquence to bring the printed page to life! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElizaveta Miller is a versatile historical keyboardist whose artistry spans harpsichord\, fortepiano\, clavichord\, organ\, and modern piano. Her repertoire encompasses five centuries of music\, with a particular focus on reviving underrepresented works\, curating imaginative programs\, and commissioning new compositions for historical instruments. She studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory\, Moskva and the Yale School of Music. \n\n\n\n\n\nWinner of the First Prize at the 2013 Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges\, Miller has since performed widely across North America and Europe at festivals such as the Montreal Baroque Festival\, Montreal Bach Festival\, Festival Classica\, MA Festival Bruges\, Beethovenfest Bonn\, Bozar Music\, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival\, and The Homecoming Festival. As a continuo player\, she has collaborated with leading conductors including Václav Luks\, Reinhard Goebel\, Maxim Emelyanychev\, Robert Hollingworth\, and Christian Curnyn. \n\n\n\nAfter nearly a decade on the faculty of the Moscow State Conservatory\, she resigned in March 2022 in protest of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She was subsequently appointed Assistant Professor of Harpsichord and Coordinator of the Early Music Area at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music.  \n\n\n\nIn 2024\, she co-founded the ensemble Les Temps Perdus with cellist Jessica Korotkin\, continuing her commitment to reimagining early music through performance and scholarship\, and to mentoring emerging artists at the outset of their careers. \n\n\n\n\n\nJoined by Yellowknife’s own Tyler Hawkins\, recognized for his versatile guitarist work\, levels up with this rare performance on his Baroque Lute featuring the music of Weiss\, Bach and Gauthier. DESCRIPTION:How do our lives intertwine? How do we manage to prosperous balances? What happens when they break down? Alteration addresses the transformations that punctuate our lives and our abilities to influence our own destiny and that of others. Aly Keita depicts an oscillating humanity on an intimate and societal level\, between stability and uncertainty\, anchoring and uprooting\, change and resistance\, renewal and repetition. The relationship with the other and the complexity of ties lead to the need to hear and rebuild our relationship with ourselves and with our environment. Exploring the meaning of relationships in our society in a wide-ranging way\, both interpersonal relationships and those with other-than-human beings\, this work opens the way to the construction of possible new links that are formed through ecological and spiritual dimensions. Here\, life takes the form of a cycle of transformations. Memories of past experiences and scars – in other words\, alteration – are transmuted into a vital breath through reactivating movements\, both individual and collective\, that revitalize our bodies and rekindle our inner power. \n\n\n\nThis show includes the use of smoke\, which may persist throughout the performance. In addition\, vibrating sounds and low frequencies are used\, which may cause physical sensations. Please take this into account if you are sensitive to these effects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis multi-arts work is as much a choreographic piece as a circus piece\, a musical work as well as a work of visual art. Martin Bellemare (Note d’intention)\n\n\n\n\n\nKira is a word in Sousou\, the language of Guinea\, meaning “path”. It evokes the idea that life is a path where we walk\, gather\, and unite. Founded in 2023\, Kira Arts creates staged works that bring together different artistic practices on equal footing and promote intercultural dialogue. In this way\, they cultivate an inclusive and diverse environment based on principles of knowledge sharing and collaboration. Their artistic approach focuses on mediation as a field for research and creation. When selecting collaborators\, it is essential that each artist possess a deep understanding of the body\, rhythm\, and movement. The uniqueness of each body and individual is a tool that can enrich shared creation. DESCRIPTION:Presented In Collaboration With \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA six-person ensemble featuring some of Canada’s greatest Jazz musicians \n\n\n\nPossessing “one of the purest sounds on the six string” (The Listening Sessions)\, guitarist-composer Brett Hansen has boldly stepped out from his work as one of Canada’s first-call session musicians with a striking debut album of his own\, Confluence. Hansen’s compositions showcase his fleet technical skill and cinematic sonic palate\, but perhaps most notable is his emotional and dynamic capacity to tell stories without words. Influences from his work in folk\, rock\, jazz\, and orchestral ensembles shine across the album\, which has remained on the international jazz charts since its release in 2024 and has garnered critical acclaim\, drawing comparison to Pat Metheny and John Abercrombie. Brett Hansen has studied with the likes of Mike Stern\, Julian Lage\, Oz Noy\, Matthew Stevens\, Nir Felder\, Jim Head\, and Rez Abassi. He performs regularly as a part of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra\, has toured internationally through Asia\, Europe\, and Canada\, and has performed on hundreds of recordings across genres with some of Canada’s finest musicians across many genres of music. Without a doubt\, Brett Hansen a guitarist “deserving of your attention” (The Intelligencer). \n\n\n\nBrett Hansen’s Confluence is a live show experience that brings together folk-inspired sensitivity\, muscular rock phrases\, and Latin rhythms to conjure a sound both atmospheric and powerful\, while showcasing a six-person ensemble featuring some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians: Mallory Chipman on vocals\, Luis Tovar on percussion\, Murray Wood on bass\, Joel Jeschke on drums\, and Chris Pruden on keyboards.  \n\n\n\nDrawing comparison to the likes of Pat Metheny and John Abercrombie\, Brett’s skills as a guitarist are only met by his expressivity as a composer\, weaving together years of influence and experience from his work as a side person with award-winning and internationally touring ensembles across genres\, and resulting in a sound that is simultaneously sophisticated and raw.​ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTender yet fierce… relatable yet fresh… Confluence showcases Brett’s focus on lyricism in both writing and performance while showcasing traits of modern jazz/improvised music with contemporary production techniques. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

Over almost two decades in the North\, Alison has enjoyed numerous opportunities to travel the Arctic and Sub-Arctic – experiences which have greatly influenced her creative work. Since 2015\, Alison has published three graphic novels\, all of which explore aspects of contemporary day-to-day life north of the 60th parallel.  Her most recent book\, ‘Degrees of Separation: A Decade North of 60’\, was released in April 2024 and was named one of the Best Canadian Comics of 2024 by CBC Books.  It also earned Alison invitations to be a guest author at several literary festivals such as the Vancouver Writers Festival\, the Toronto Comic Arts Festival and the Stockholm International Comics Festival.
