SUMMARY:Heart of the Dene Storytelling Festival in Norman Wells
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with NorthwesTel \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaggie Mercredi is Denesoline from Gani Koe’ and is a member of the Kai Taile’ Dene First Nation. With a vivid imagination since childhood\, she could visualize the stories heard around her\, understand them\, and then re-sharing them in her own way. She was introduced to the performing arts as a young adult\, inspiring her to learn more about theatre. She joined various performance groups\, became a co-founder of an Indigenous theatre group in the North\, graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in Toronto\, and completed storytelling and music residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts. With the skills and knowledge gained\, she has written\, directed\, and produced for many venues. She has also coached groups in theatre and performance skills training. Maggie is honoured and excited with the opportunity to write alongside other artists in bringing alive the stories we carry from our language\, our ancestors\, our parents\, our family\, friends and communities for future generations to enjoy long after we are gone. \n\n\n\nDavid Gon is Tlicho. He was born in Yellowknife and raised in the bush with the traditional way of life. He then moved to Behchoko to start school. He grew up listening to the beat of the drum and watched people dance to the rhythm. He taught himself how to play when he was 12 years old on a guitar his father bought him. David later formed a band called ‘Captain Eddy.’ David has written his own songs and recorded albums of original music. His music is the expression of the value of the old ways as well as the new\, using the traditional Dene drum\, reflecting early influences and admiration of the wisdom\, stories and songs of the land\, his ancestors\, the Elders and the hopes and dreams of the young people. David has performed at Expo 86 in Vancouver\, at the Canada Winter Games in Cape Breton in 1987\, at Culture Canada in Ottawa in 1988\, and at the Arctic Winter Games in 1990. \n\n\n\nCassandra (River) Blondin Burt is a two-spirit Dene Poet\, Artist\, and Earth Medicine Maker. Their work is grounded in the exploration of healing through co-creation with earth and story. Cassandra believes that the radical act of being in relation to our other-than-human relations is an act of political and personal rebellion and a pathway for collective and personal transformation and healing. Through a deepening relationship with the land-body we call Earth\, Cassandra explores regenerative art and creation praxis that allows them to move through myriad contemporary settler-colonial social structures and ideologies with intent and curiosity.

DESCRIPTION:Bella Dance Academy presents The Nutcracker\, a magical holiday tradition for the whole family! \n\n\n\nIt’s Christmas Eve at the Silberhaus residence\, and excitement runs high as last minute preparations are made. Guests begin to arrive to celebrate the holiday with Clara and her family. Arriving late in the midst of the celebration is Drosselmeyer\, Clara’s mysterious uncle. He entertains everyone with magic tricks and mechanical dolls. Drosselmeyer then presents Clara with a wooden nutcracker soldier. Her sisters feel slighted and become jealous. They try to take the nutcracker from Clara and in the struggle\, the nutcracker is broken. \n\n\n\nClara is devastated\, but Drosselmeyer mends the nutcracker. As the children grow weary the guests depart\, and Drosselmeyer disappears as mysteriously as he had arrived. Clara carefully places her beloved nutcracker under the Christmas tree before the family retires to bed. That night\, Clara tiptoes back to the Christmas tree and falls asleep next to the wooden Nutcrackerdoll. Once the clock strikes midnight\, the magic begins!  \n\n\n\nJoin Bella Dance Academy this holiday season and experience the magic of this timeless holiday classic\, The Nutcracker.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet 2pm Tickets Here\n\nGet 7pm Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Trio Mediaeval in Inuvik
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY-NOMINATED GUESTS FROM NORWAY \n\n\n\nANNA MARIA FRIMAN / LINN ANDREA FUGLSETH / JORUNN LOVISE HUSAN \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe crystalline voices of Trio Mediaeval have captivated audiences since the group was founded in Oslo in 1997. The Grammy-nominated trio’s core repertoire features sacred monophonic and polyphonic medieval music from England\, Italyand France; contemporary works written for the ensemble; and traditional Norwegian\, Swedish and Icelandic ballads and songs. The group’s fruitfulrelationship with the legendary ECM Records\, collaborative spirit\, and busy touring schedule has earned them worldwide renown. Trio Mediaeval’s first of eight albums on ECM Records\, Words of the Angel\, landed on Billboard’s Top 10 and was a Stereophile “Recording of the Month.” Further releases on ECM followed in 2004 with Soir\, dit-elle and in 2005 with Stella Maris. The first three recordings\,produced by John Potter\, consisted of medieval and contemporary works. In 2007\, the trio teamed with the Norwegian percussionist Birger Mistereggen on a recording of Norwegian ballads and songs entitled Folk Songs\, produced by Manfred Eicher. Folk Songs was nominated for the Norwegian Spellemannprisen and for a Grammy Award for “Best Chamber Music Performance.” A Worcester Ladymass (2011) was also on Billboard’s Top 10 list\, and was selected by the German Record Critic’s Award as one of the best new releases in the “Early Music” category. The trio’s Aquilonis was named a “Top Music Recording of 2014” bythe New York Times. In 2017\, Trio Mediaeval and jazz trumpeter Arve Henriksen released Rímur — medieval and folk music from Iceland\, Sweden and Norway. In 2020 Trio Mediaeval produced the album Solacium on the Norwegian label 2L\, with Grammy-winning Morten Lindberg as producer/engineer. In 2023\, 2L releases Trio Mediaeval’s latest recording\, An Old Hall Ladymass. Since 2006\, the trio has embarked on a number of collaborative projects with Norwegian jazz/improvisational musicians. These collaborations have led to concerts and radio broadcasts at the Bergen Festival (where the trio was Artist-in-Residence in 2007)\, Molde Jazz Festival\, Wigmore Hall\, West Cork Music Festival\, as well as performances in Norway\, Holland\, Italy and Germany. \n\n\n\n\n“Singing doesn’t get more unnervingly beautiful\,” wrote Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle\, who declared their San Francisco debut “among the musical highlights of the year.” He added\, “To hear the group’s note-perfectcounterpoint – as pristine and inviting as clean\, white linens – is to be astonished at what the human voice is capable of. \n\n\n\n\n\n“The three women of the Norwegian Trio Mediaeval can look backproudly over 20 years of uncovering the often mysterious andmystical music written centuries before the cantatas of Bach or themasses of Palestrina.” “Rating: 5/5” \nWilliam Dart\, New Zealand Herald

SUMMARY:NACC Presents: Pawakan Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with \n\n\n\nA CREE TAKEOVER | BY RENELTTA ARLUKINSPIRED BY THE YOUTH OF FROG LAKE FIRST NATION \n\n\n\nCO-PRODUCTION WITH AKPIK THEATRE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe groundbreaking Pawâkan Macbeth is Indigenous playwright\, Reneltta Arluk’s reimagining of Shakespeare’s darkest play into Cree history\, legend and cosmology. Set in Plains Cree territory in the 1870s\, before the establishment of First Nations reserves\, Pawâkan Macbeth takes place in a time when First Nations warred with each other and the Canadian Government over territory\, food supplyand trade. Harsh environments brought immense fear\, starvation\, and uncertainty together to awaken the darkest of Cree spirits\, the Wihtiko – an evil being with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. Inspired from stories shared by Indigenous Elders in Frog Lake First Nation following protocol\, Arluk has created a new\,visceral experience of Macbeth; a convergence of Shakespeare’s language\, modern English\, and Cree. As historical wars are waged with the Cree and Nakodaagainst the Blackfoot\, Macikosisân (Macbeth)\, a great Okihcitâw (warrior)\, becomes consumed by the cannibal spirit Wihtiko. He plots with KâwanihotIskwew (Lady Macbeth)\, to kill their Chief\, Okimâw Wîpâstim (Duncan).
