DESCRIPTION:In partnership with  \n\n\n\nA CREE TAKEOVER | BY RENELTTA ARLUKINSPIRED BY THE YOUTH OF FROG LAKE FIRST NATION \n\n\n\nCO-PRODUCTION WITH AKPIK THEATRE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe groundbreaking Pawâkan Macbeth is Indigenous playwright\, Reneltta Arluk’s reimagining of Shakespeare’s darkest play into Cree history\, legend and cosmology. Set in Plains Cree territory in the 1870s\, before the establishment of First Nations reserves\, Pawâkan Macbeth takes place in a time when First Nations warred with each other and the Canadian Government over territory\, food supplyand trade. Harsh environments brought immense fear\, starvation\, and uncertainty together to awaken the darkest of Cree spirits\, the Wihtiko – an evil being with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. Inspired from stories shared by Indigenous Elders in Frog Lake First Nation following protocol\, Arluk has created a new\,visceral experience of Macbeth; a convergence of Shakespeare’s language\, modern English\, and Cree. As historical wars are waged with the Cree and Nakodaagainst the Blackfoot\, Macikosisân (Macbeth)\, a great Okihcitâw (warrior)\, becomes consumed by the cannibal spirit Wihtiko. He plots with KâwanihotIskwew (Lady Macbeth)\, to kill their Chief\, Okimâw Wîpâstim (Duncan). DESCRIPTION:(PRONOUNCED “PILK-SILK”) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith a style perpetually galvanized by darkness and haunting northern beauty\, sisters Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay come together to create an Inuit-style throat singing duo\, PIQSIQ. Performing ancient traditional songs and eerie new compositions\, they leave their listeners enthralled with the infinity of possible answers to the question “What is the meaning of life?”  \n\n\n\nWith roots in Nunavut’s Kitikmeot and Kivalliq\, the sisters grew up in Yellowknife\, Northwest Territories. Their love of katajjaq\, Inuit throat singing\, began in childhood and has bonded them throughout their lives. After years of forging this hard-won skill\, they developed their own form blended with their love of haunting melodies and otherworldly sounds.  \n\n\n\nAs PIQSIQ\, they perform improvisational looping live\, creating a dynamic audience experience that changes with every show. PIQSIQ incorporates their dark and ethereal style into their recordings and have produced four studio albums to date. The workshopsallowed participants to develop a story\, characters\, and scripts\, which wereturned into two immersive storytelling experiences: Sedeè & Dechı ̨ta\, Zo ̨o ̨ & No ̨di \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe workshops were structured in a way that: \n\n\n\n\nThe Elders presented stories and advised the Youths about what it was like in the time that the Youths’ stories were set.\n\n\n\nThe Youths developed their own story and scripts. They then performed the actionsof the 3D characters in the story using Motion Capture (MOCAP) Suits.\n\n\n\nThe Adults then developed the environment and character 3D models in each story.\n\n\n\nProfessional artists were involved along the way to ensure the quality and completionof the projects. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of the leading professional resources involved in this project: Davis Heslep\, Shaun Anderson\, Andy Rudolph\, and Laurie-Ann Lines. NACC would also like to send a big Thank You to all of the students\, elders\, and drummers involved in making this happen. We are happy this initiative allowed local youth to engage in indigenous storytelling\, VR animation and design\, playing live\, and sound design.
