SUMMARY:TOKARA in Hay River
DESCRIPTION:TOKARA was founded in Nagano Prefecture\, Japan\, by Wadaiko Artist Art Lee. The group has become a strong force in the world of Wadaiko (Taiko Drumming) both in Japan and internationally. \n\n\n\nWhile incorporating arrangements of traditional Taiko pieces into their performance\, TOKARA has created an all-new style of Taiko\, where electrifying speed and power meet the group’s own arrangements of movement\, incorporating dance and the circular fluidity of the Chinese martial arts and aikido. \n\n\n\nTOKARA’s new style of Taiko music also brings rhythmic signatures from other cultures around the world to create a jazzy and exciting style of taiko music. TOKARA started its international debut with a six-week coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. and Canada\, followed by a two-month tour in 2005\, both to critical acclaim and sold-out audiences. TOKARA has since performed as the main attraction in many events\, including the Hamanako Hanahaku All-Japan Expo and the Taipei City 120th Anniversary World Music Festival. \n\n\n\nSince the group’s inception\, TOKARA tours three to four times a year in Asia\, the U.S.\, various countries in Europe\, Australia\, and India\, as well as making regular appearances at some of the top Taiko performances all over Japan. \n\n\n\nTOKARA continues the intensive process of continually reinventing new pieces and playing styles in an attempt to further develop the group’s originality. The members of TOKARA also continue to research and study traditional Wadaiko pieces\, and to incorporate arrangements of these pieces into their performances. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReceive the “Family Pack” discount when adding at least one adult and one youth ticket to your cart. SUMMARY:Children of God
DESCRIPTION:Children of God is must-see theatre for Canadians. Marsha Lederman\, The Globe and Mail\n\n\n\nChildren of God is a musical about an Oji-Cree family whose children were taken away to a residential school in Northern Ontario. The story of Rita\, a mother who was never let past the school’s gate\, and her kids\, Tom and Julia\, who never knew she came\, pushes toward redemption. Children of God offers a blend of ancient traditions and contemporary realities\, celebrating resilience and the power of the Indigenous cultural spirit. Inspired by First Nations music\, Corey Payette’s moving score also includes echoes of provocative Broadway masterpieces such as Fun Home and Next to Normal.Children of God takes place in two time periods during the 1950s and 1970s\, and is set during a time when it is mandatory by law for all Indigenous children to attend residential schools.Performed in English and Anishinaabemowin\, this musical is a tremendously impactful piece that explores the history and intergenerational impacts of the residential school system and provides a platform for dialogue about what happened to Indigenous communities in Canada. \n\n\n\n\n“It’s an opportunity for our settler allies to experience the story seen through the eyes of an Indigenous family. What would it have been like if it had been your child? Once people put themselves in those shoes\, we’re going to see real\, lasting change in our communities.” \nCorey Payette\, playwright\n\n\n\nTouring for the first time since 2019\, we are thrilled to announce that the award-winning production\, Children of God\, is coming to Yellowknife at the Northern Arts and Culture Centre in April\, 2025. Performed in English and Anishinaabemowin\, this musical is a tremendously impactful piece that explores the history and intergenerational effects of the residential school system\, and provides a platform for dialogue about what happened to Indigenous communities in Canada. \n\n\n\nThis play contains some content that may be triggering for some members of the audience. For content warnings\, please contact our box office at boxoffice@naccnt.ca or 867-873-4950. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCELEBRATING THE RESILIENCE AND POWER OF THE INDIGENOUS CULTURAL SPIRIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEHIND THE WORK\n\n\n\n\n\nCorey Payette is an interdisciplinary storyteller\, writer\, composer\, director in theatre and film. He is a member of the Mattagami First Nations\, with French Canadian and Irish ancestry\, and lives on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səl’ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.Known for his deeply moving\, large-scale original musical creations\, Payette’s work challenges the public’s notion of what musicals can be\, inserting Indigenous perspectives and narratives into mainstream spaces\, igniting conversations that inspire social change. Payette’s work explores themes of colonization\, Indigenous language revitalization\, cultural healing\, reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples\, and the complexity of historic and contemporary Indigenous experiences across music\, theatre\, and film.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery once in a while someone as special as Corey Payette comes along with a project as special as this. SUMMARY:Bach to Benny Goodman
DESCRIPTION:A Co-Production with \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImaginative musical mastery\, unorthodox arrangements and tight ensemble playing… WHOLENOTE MAGAZINE\n\n\n\nThe only duo of clarinet and digital accordion\, Bridge & Wolak fuse technology\, virtuosity\, and improv comedy to create an unforgettable concert experience. Bach to Benny Goodman begins with refined baroque music\, journeys through smoky Parisian jazz clubs and Polish fields\, and arrives in New York for the music of the ‘King of Swing’—Benny Goodman. \n\n\n\nEvery performance is riotously unique with Bridge & Wolak’s signature explosive comedy and audience engagement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Artists\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Bridge began playing when he was 5 and growing up in Calgary. His mom bought an accordion at a garage sale for $5. A family friend started teaching him to play by ear. Formal lessons began at 7.Today he performs on a digital accordion – essentially a computer housed in a conventional accordion case that can imitate the sound of just about any instrument you can imagine. He can single-handedly shake the rafters sounding like a full rock drum kit or a symphony orchestra. He’s also a master of the more familiar acoustic accordion\, a soulful\, highly expressive instrument. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWolak received his doctorate from the Paderewski Music Academy in Poznan\, Poland. He grew up in Włocławek\, a small city west of Warsaw. His parents were both professional musicians and by the age of 5\, Wolak was taking piano lessons and dreaming of becoming a famous musician. At 12\, Wolak took up the clarinet and became obsessed with mastering the instrument. At 16 he left home for studies at the conservatory in Poznan. Later he moved to Canada which offered him a safe harbour\, a place to launch a stellar international career as a soloist and an offramp to pursue his impressive academic achievements. \n\n\n\n\n\nFresh\, exciting and fun\, dispelling any of the oldpreconceptions about classical music… BARRIE EXAMINER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

SUMMARY:Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:THE RITE OF SPRING\n\n\n\nIn Marie Chouinard’s work\, The Rite of Spring occupies a special position. In choosing to re-examine this powerful hymn to life\, she has created her first choreography based on a musical score. Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring explores a New World and marks the entry of dance into modernity. In this avant-garde work\, Marie Chouinard again finds an original pulsation that is essential to her movement. Far from contradicting the rhythm of her dance\, the cadence and force of the music inspire\, accompany and energize her\, forming both the echo and the musical counterpoint of an organic\, vigorous and vivid choreography. \n\n\n\n\nThere is no story in my Rite- no development\, no cause and effect. Only synchronicity. It is as if I were dealing with the very moment after the instant life first appeared. The performance is the unfolding of that moment. I have the feeling that before that moment there was an extraordinary burst of light\, a flash of lightning. \nMarie Chouinard\n\n\n\nPrelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\n\n\n\nWhen he wrote the Afternoon of a Faun in 1876\, Stéphane Mallarmé fulfilled a dream: to write poetry for the theatre. The poem’s musicality inspired Claude Debussy to compose Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun in 1894. In 1912\, in Paris\, Vaslav Nijinski created his first choreography\, based on Mallarmé’s poem. In it\, he gave life – intense and sensual life – to his own raw and animalistic erotic nature\, thereby abruptly breaking with classical tradition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis show contains partial nudity. Please contact the box office if you require more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEHIND THE WORK\n\n\n\n\n\nMarie Chouinard is a director\, an author\, a visual artist\, and she also creates choreographies for site-specific installations\, for the screen\, and in real-time for the web. Named Officière des Arts et des Lettre in France\, recipient of a Bessie Award in New York\, she has received some thirty of the most prestigious awards and honours. Her works\, radical and profound\, with a unique signature are nonetheless enduring and appear in the repertoires of major international ballet companies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organized by:

A blend of storytelling\, contemporary dance\, live projections\, and puppetry featuring her glass eye. Charming\, touching\, unexpected\, and laugh-out-loud funny\, BLINDSIDE is a captivating narrative delivered with vulnerability by a contagious performer. \n\n\n\nIt’s a magnificent show\, go see it as soon as you can! Lucie-Madeleine Delisle\, ICI RADIO-CANADA – Critique\, October 17\, 2022\n\n\n\nNote: The performance may contain surprising imagery and addresses sensitive topics such as cancer and bullying.
