Northern Spark Emerging Artist Series
A Collaboration Between NACC and The UNDerground

Hughes is the folk‑alt‑country project of Yellowknife musician Benji Straker. Blending folk, alt‑country, and indie sensibilities, Hughes creates music that is honest, atmospheric, and deeply personal. The project draws inspiration from the stark beauty of the North and the quiet complexities of lived experience, offering listeners space to reflect, breathe, and connect.
With textured arrangements, intimate lyrics, and a grounded sense of place, Hughes crafts soundscapes that feel both expansive and close to home. The self‑titled debut full‑length album, released in July 2025, captures the heart of the project’s sound — vulnerable, spacious, and rooted in the lived‑in details of northern life and relationships.
